Scarily fun Halloween activities to do in the garden

pumpkin carving

It’s time to get into the Halloween spirit, and where better to get up to some Halloween hi-jinks than in your garden, out in the elements? We love Halloween here at Savoy Timber, so much so that we’ve devised a list of Halloween themed activities that you can do to get the whole family together during the spooky season. Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin carving

We’ve all done this at some point or another, it’s an absolute classic! Pumpkin carving is the ultimate Halloween leisure activity, it’s fun, creative, and it’s something that everyone can get involved with regardless of age. You’ll need a few bits to get started: plenty of newspaper, a small knife, and something to scoop the insides of the pumpkin out. Simple!

Start by cutting a hole around the stem of the pumpkin, ensuring it’s big enough to fit hands through! From here, scoop out all the insides out (this is a great task for young children and toddlers, as it’s messy!), then start carving. The possibilities are endless when it comes to pumpkin carving, and if you or another member of your family makes a mess of it, no problem. Let’s be honest, you can always patch it up with some masking tape and pass it off as a mummy.

apple-bobbing

Apple bobbing

Another Halloween classic that’s great fun for all the family, apple bobbing has been a staple of entertainment since Celtic times, probably because it’s really easy to set-up. Simply fill a bucket or tub with water and drop in a bag full of apples, and you’re good to go! The aim of the game is to dunk your head in the tub and catch one of the apples with your teeth, without using your hands! The winner is the person who catches the most apples in their mouth.

Make your garden a bat haven!

Here’s a fun fact – there are 17 different species of bats found in Britain, and they’re an animal we commonly associate with dark, scary locations and vampires. So, given the dark and creepy aura that surrounds these winged rodents, what better time is there to celebrate them than Halloween? Wrap up warm and take a seat in the garden one night and see if you can spot some. If you’re not having much luck, they’re quite common in more rural areas of the UK, so head out for a walk in the woods if you dare!

If the nighttime walk through the woods isn’t quite for you (understandable) then there are more than a couple of ways of celebrating bats from the safety of your own home. Why not consider building a small bat box? Very similar to a bird box, if you’re handy, this could be a fun activity for you to do with your kids (with plenty of supervision of course). If not, you can always purchase one from a garden centre or online.

Of course, these are just a few suggestions for you to consider. We’re sure you’ve got your own thoughts on what makes for the perfect Halloween evening, so feel free to add these to your list!
