So, to help you pick between them, we’re going to explain the difference between composite and timber decking, so you can work out which one you might prefer more for your garden space.
As you’ve probably already guessed, timber is a wholly natural material, one that’s long been a popular choice for people looking for a reasonably priced and reliable decking solution. Composite on the other hand, is made from a combination of recycled plastics and wood fibres, to give the aesthetic of natural wood. Composite decking has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the practical advantages it can offer you in the long run.
A well maintained timber decking design can last for years before it needs to be replaced. To maximise its lifespan, it needs to be properly maintained, so it’s worth making sure you’re doing this by regularly cleaning it, and applying a new coat of decking oil at least once every year.
Composite decking, on the other hand, will last around 20-30 years, with little to no maintenance. Due to the plastic element of the board, there’s no need to treat or stain it to prevent moisture damage. However, composite decking can be slightly more prone to scratches, due to the plastic element of its structure.
On balance, it’s quite a tough choice! If you’re a fan of a more natural look and feel to your decking, then timber is definitely the option for you.
