This is one of the most common questions we’re asked here at Savoy Timber, so if you’re considering adding some decking to your garden set-up, you’re in exactly the right place. Both timber and composite decking have unique features and benefits that will suit your garden.
We’ve supplied both high-quality timber decking and composite decking solutions to our customers for years, so we know that each of these options will appeal differently, depending on your tastes and requirements for your decking. So, to help you pick between them, we’re going to explain the difference between composite and timber decking, so you can work out which one you might prefer more for your garden space.
As you’ve probably already guessed, timber is a wholly natural material, one that’s long been a popular choice for people looking for a reasonably priced and reliable decking solution. Composite on the other hand, is made from a combination of recycled plastics and wood fibres, to give the aesthetic of natural wood. Composite decking has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the practical advantages it can offer you in the long run.
A well maintained timber decking design can last for years before it needs to be replaced. To maximise its lifespan, it needs to be properly maintained, so it’s worth making sure you’re doing this by regularly cleaning it, and applying a new coat of decking oil at least once every year.
Composite decking, on the other hand, will last around 20-30 years, with little to no maintenance. Due to the plastic element of the board, there’s no need to treat or stain it to prevent moisture damage. However, composite decking can be slightly more prone to scratches, due to the plastic element of its structure.
On balance, it’s quite a tough choice! If you’re a fan of a more natural look and feel to your decking, then timber is definitely the option for you. On the other hand, if you’re in more of a ‘set it and forget it’ frame of mind, and want a sleek modern design for your garden decking, then composite is the choice for you.
Both materials can be purchased in a range of options here at Savoy Timber, and both have their own benefits and drawbacks depending on your taste. For composite, take your pick between our Super Stable decking boards, which provide you with great quality at the lowest price in the UK, or our Solid Core decking range – the ultimate dual capped composite decking boards with a 10 year guarantee.
Alternatively, our timber decking is slow grown (approx 80 years) from Swedish Pine and pressure treated with Tanalith E. Coupled with our 15 Year Anti Rot Guarantee, and you’ve got yourself a winner.
