Amongst the brand new additions to our site recently are our hardwood decking boards \u2013 and we\u2019re already very excited about them here at Savoy Timber! We\u2019ve not ever stocked them before, with most of our decking products<\/a> being softwood decking. This seems like a great opportunity for our experts to explain some of the key differences between the two types of decking, and why hardwood boards would be perfect for your decking with summer already on the way.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s The Difference Between Hardwood And Softwood Decking?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s tricky to say that one type of wood is definitively better than the other \u2013 it all depends on what you\u2019re looking for in your decking. Softwood is cut from coniferous trees which are famously faster to grow, making them economical and cost-effective \u2013 great if you\u2019re after a solution that\u2019s easy on your budget. Hardwood decking, however, is cut from trees which are generally slower to reach maturity. While this makes it slightly more expensive, it also gives hardwood decking a variety of characteristics that make it hugely attractive as a decking solution.<\/p>\n

Advantages Of Hardwood Decking<\/h3>\n

Hardwood decking absolutely excels in terms of its longevity, performance and durability. The durability is mostly thanks to its high oil content, which makes it highly resistant to adverse weather like snow, hail and rain, as well as certain breeds of insects which often try to burrow into the boards. On a similar note, it also doesn\u2019t warp or twist as easily as softwood decking does, and is harder to mark, which means that it doesn\u2019t need as much regular maintenance or looking after. Obviously you\u2019ll still need to give it a bit of TLC every now and again, but on the whole hardwood decking isn\u2019t as intensive as softwood.<\/p>\n

Also unlike softwood decking, hardwood doesn\u2019t require painting or staining \u2013 instead, it\u2019s far more rewarding to simply protect it for its natural beauty. Its natural warm, rich brown colour gives your decking a stunning visual impact. And while softwood decking will last you a good few years before it starts to wear out or discolour, hardwood decking will even outperform it in terms of longevity; as long as it\u2019s properly looked after, your hardwood decking will last for well over a decade, and likely far beyond that.<\/p>\n

At Savoy Timber, we use Yellow Balau (also known as Bangkirai) for our hardwood decking products. The Yellow Balau is a naturally occurring tree in Indonesia, and it\u2019s quickly become one of the most popular timber species in the UK for hardwood decking. Our ethics are important to us here at Savoy Timber, so like all our timbers, our hardwood decking is responsibly sourced in accordance with established agencies, who make sure that at least one tree replanted for every one cut down. (It\u2019s one of the reasons that Savoy Timber have been awarded the FIRA Gold standard certification for all of our products \u2013 and we\u2019re very proud of it!)<\/p>\n

Though the price mark is marginally higher, hardwood decking is an undeniably worthwhile investment; it\u2019s brilliantly cost-effective over the long term, and it can\u2019t be beaten in terms of a quality decking project.<\/p>\n

Both are reeded on one side and completely reversible; the value boards are smooth on the reverse side whereas the deluxe variants are grooved.
