So, when should you stain your new decking?<\/h2>\n

The answer is that it depends. Let us explain. When you get a new deck, and it\u2019s been freshly laid, it\u2019s usually recommended that you leave it to \u2018weather\u2019 naturally, and this can be anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on where you get your decking.<\/p>\n

Weathering is the process of leaving your newly laid deck to sit in your garden unstained to let any treatment erode. It ensures that your stain fully seeps into the woods and sticks to your decking so it looks nice even when it dries. If it’s untreated with any wood preservatives, technically you could stain it straight away, although it’s unlikely to defoliate straight away if you don’t.<\/p>\n

One thing we will say, however, is that it’s always important to check with your manufacturer what they recommend for your particular style or type of timber decking to be 100% sure you’re making the best choice for your new decking.<\/p>\n

When is the best time to apply your first deck stain?<\/h2>\n

When you’ve got a good idea of when you should be staining your deck according to your manufacturer’s directions, you can go ahead and start picking out your colour and tools. Once you have everything you need, there are a few minor details to consider – like the weather, for example.<\/p>\n

When it comes to staining your deck, you\u2019ll want to wait for a couple of pleasant days to get the job done. This way, you can really take your time with your handiwork, especially if you need to apply two coats. You want it to be just right – not too hot, not too cold, and mild enough to enjoy. Checking the forecast can help you prepare for the day and ensure you have everything you need. You want it warm enough to help your deck dry but not so hot that it dries too fast and becomes patchy – so avoid staining your decking during a heatwave. You’ll also want to make sure you’re not going to get caught in any sporadic rainstorms – you don’t want all your hard work to wash away.<\/p>\n

Make sure you check how long the stain you pick out takes to dry; this is the amount of time you\u2019ll need to avoid contact with your decking or laying out any of your garden furniture, and avoid getting it wet – so be mindful if you like to water the plants with the hosepipe.<\/p>\n
