This is especially true for the kitchen. From family meals and to parties, to endless cups of tea and coffee, there’s a lot going on in there. A daily wipe down of your laminate kitchen worktops might tide you over in the short-term, but a good old-fashioned spring clean will help you tackle those areas that are often overlooked.

To help you out here at Savoy Timber, we’ve put together an ultimate kitchen cleaning checklist. If you can tick these tasks off one by one, your kitchen will be sparkling in no time.

1. Start with a thorough declutter

Decluttering should be the first thing you tackle in any room, but especially the kitchen. It’s not unusual for many of us to have small bits of pieces in cupboards that are fast approaching their sell-by-dates. You don’t want to be keeping out of date food around for a host of reasons, but most obviously because of bacteria.

So, take a look in your cupboard and on your counter tops at what’s lying around. If it’s out of date immediately, dispose of it. If it’s in date and you know you won’t use it, why not consider donating it to your local food bank? This also goes for chipped plates and mugs and mis-matched cutlery.

2. Clean the dishwasher and scrub down the sink

While dishwashers are great at cleaning your dishes, ironically they aren’t very good at cleaning themselves. The same goes for the sink. Dishwashers are prone to food build-up and limescale, which will stop your dishes coming out spotless and sparkly. Fortunately, they’re pretty easy to clean.

Start by removing the trays and getting in there in with a scrubbing brush. You can use a dishwasher cleaning product, or if you prefer a more natural alternative, baking soda and vinegar will do the trick. What’s most important is that you clean everything thoroughly, even the door and the filter. After you’re satisfied with your handiwork, run the dishwasher on a hot cycle to flush any remaining grime out.

For the sink, you can simply wipe it down with an all-purpose cleaner. Just make sure you give any dirt and grime patches a good scrub before rinsing and polishing.

3. Disinfect the bins

Not an appealing job, but a necessary one. Even if you’re taking the bin out and wiping it down regularly, it’s not enough to keep bacteria at bay. Generally it’s a good idea to rinse your bin twice a week, but let’s be honest – sometimes it just slips to the back of your mind. Giving your bin a thorough disinfecting during your spring clean is an absolute necessity.

To make it slightly more bearable, you could take it out into the garden for a quick hose-down to get rid of any yucky stuff that’s hanging around in the bottom before you give it a good scrub. You can also wear a trusty pair of Marigolds to protect your hands – even up to your elbows, if you’re so inclined.

4. Wipe down the cabinets and counter tops

Cabinets are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning, especially the insides. Gleaming cabinets make a huge difference in the overall appearance of your kitchen too. The insides of your cabinets can gather dust and grime just like anywhere else, so even if you’re wiping them down regularly, they need a deep clean.

Start by removing the contents and hoovering the insides with a handheld hoover. If you don’t have one, then a dust pan and brush will work. Once it’s free of debris, you can wipe down the shelves and inside the doors with an all purpose cleaner and a microfibre cloth. After they’re nice and dry, you can pop your things back in.

Once you’ve finished your cabinets, you can repeat these steps with your counter tops, making sure you remove everything first to get the best results.

5. Clean the oven and the hob

The oven and the hob are two of the most used appliances in the kitchen, so it’s really important to give them a deep clean every now and then. This is one of those tasks where the longer you leave it, the worse it becomes, so it’s best to just bite the bullet and get it done. It’s not as bad as you might think.

Mix baking soda and a little bit of white cleaning vinegar into a paste, slather it over your hob, wait 30 minutes and simply wipe away. Pretty painless, right? If that’s not enough, you can then use some all purpose cleaning spray and a cloth to really make it shine.

You can even repeat these steps for the oven. However, if your oven is particularly grimy, you might want to use something slightly stronger like oven cleaner.

6. Freshen up the fridge

Over time the fridge might start to smell a little funky. It’s perfectly normal, but still definitely a sign that it needs a deep clean. Start by removing all the contents and check to see what’s in date. This goes for sauces and jars too. If you know you aren’t going to touch it again, get rid of it.

After your fridge is empty, start by giving the insides a wipe down with a product that kills bacteria. It’s best to use a natural cleaner to avoid anything nasty coming into contact with your food. If any weird smells linger, go back to the trusty white vinegar and baking soda concoction and that should clear up any remaining odours. Use a 50:50 ratio of each.

7. Hoover and mop the floors

Once all other tasks have been completed, the only thing that’s left to do is hoover or sweep the kitchen floor to remove any grit, dirt or bits and pieces that have fallen to the ground during your cleaning process. Removing the accumulation of debris before mopping will make the task a lot easier and more sanitary.

The last step is to fill a bucket with warm water and a small amount of floor cleaner, not too much, or else it will leave a layer of residue. Start in the furthest corners of your kitchen and mop your way back to the door, making sure to wring your mop out well.

And you’re done!

Here at Savoy Timber, we believe that after you’ve spent time and effort creating your dream kitchen, it deserves to sparkle!
