So, now is the time to return to the garden and complete a few odd jobs to help maintain your decking solutions, and here at Savoy Timber we know just the tasks to help you do help keep your timber decking in tip-top condition as we look ahead to Spring.

Keep an eye out for mould

Because timber decking is an organic feature that spends a lot of time exposed to the elements, it can easily become damp, leading to the possibility of mould forming. This needs to be kept on top of throughout the rainy seasons (which admittedly is most seasons here in the UK!), as mouldy decking can lead to rot which compromises the integrity of the decking boards.

Clean it thoroughly

Throughout the winter months, it’s common for debris like weeds, leaves and dirt to make its way onto your timber decking. As a result, your space can be left looking a little untidy and visually unappealing. What’s more, if organic debris is left for too long, it can rot and potentially penetrate the timber, causing it to rot (of course, you don’t have to worry about this happening to composite decking). Fear not though, it’s nothing that a good brush and hot soapy water can’t sort out. Once a month or so, take a firm brush and give your decking a good brushing down. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to spot any tougher marks, and these can be removed with a bit of hot soapy water and elbow grease.

Preserve it with timber treatment

Once you’ve given your timber decking a good scrubbing, why not consider applying some wood preservatives to help keep your decking strong and healthy for a longer period of time? To do this, make sure that the timber is clean and dry, and ensure that any areas that have begun to deteriorate are sanded down to ensure you’re working on a quality surface. For the same reasons, you’ll need to remove any previously applied wood stain or paint with sand paper. When you’ve finished preparing the surface, apply a nice even coat of preservative using a paint brush, ensuring you cover any gaps and cracks. This is particularly useful for protecting your timber from damage that can be caused by adverse weather, while also improving the lifespan of your decking.

So, if your decking solution has had a bit of a battering over the winter and you could do with some replacements. then you’re already in exactly the right place. Here at Savoy Timber we have a huge range of timber decking products available, making us your one-stop shop for decking.
