Halloween presents a variety of opportunities to get the family together to enjoy some frightfully good fun &#8211; whether that\u2019s decorating the house, watching scary films, or coming together to cook up some tasty Halloween themed treats.<\/p>\n<p>For most of us, toffee apples are a Halloween staple, and it\u2019s easy to see why. They\u2019re sweet, delicious, and require a little bit of kitchen witchcraft to get them right. So, here\u2019s how you can make some of these killer treats at home!<\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>8\u00a0red apples<\/li>\n<li>400g\u00a0caster sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp\u00a0lemon juice<\/li>\n<li>4 tbsp\u00a0golden syrup<\/li>\n<li>red or black food colouring<\/li>\n<li>red or black food glitter\u00a0(optional)<\/li>\n<li>8 sturdy lolly sticks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to make toffee apples<\/h2>\n<p>To start, push the sharpest end of each lolly stick into the end of each apple (make sure it\u2019s firmly wedged in, you don\u2019t want it falling out!). If you\u2019re doing this with young children, we\u2019d definitely advise careful supervision. Next, cover a large chopping board with an equally large sheet of baking paper.<br \/>\nFrom here, tip all the sugar into a large saucepan along with all the lemon juice and 100ml water. Turn on the hob, and bring the sugary mix to a simmer, and cook it until the sugar has completely dissolved. You can swirl the pan gently to move the sugar around, but don\u2019t stir it, as you want to avoid getting the mixture on any of your utensils.<\/p>\n<p>Once the sugar has dissolved, pour in the golden syrup and bubble the mixture until it hardens, or reaches 150C on a sugar thermometer &#8211; this is your toffee. If you don&#8217;t have a thermometer, you can test if the toffee is ready by dropping a small amount of cold water onto it. If it hardens instantly, and it\u2019s brittle when you try to remove it, you\u2019re on for a winner. However, if it&#8217;s soft, continue to boil it on a low temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Once the toffee is ready, tip in a few drops of food colouring and mix it and turn the heat off.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter wp-image-3962 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/toffee-apple.jpg\" alt=\"toffee apples\" width=\"735\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/toffee-apple.jpg 735w, https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/toffee-apple-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to be quick for this last bit &#8211; dip each apple into the toffee, tipping the pan to cover the whole apple. Lift it out of the pan and let any excess toffee drip off before placing it on the baking paper. Repeat this step with all the remaining apples, gently heating the toffee again if you need to keep it supple.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all it takes! These tasty treats are best enjoyed on the same day, so if you\u2019re looking for something fun to do as a pre-trick-or-treat activity, making toffee apples is definitely a great option.
