With autumn right around the corner, you\u2019ll need to get your garden and decking prepared for the chill of winter! But where to start? To help you out, we\u2019ve devised a list of the top jobs to try and get done before the winter arrives!<\/p>\n

Scrub any shade paint<\/h2>\n

As the darker days roll in, you\u2019ll need to ensure that your greenhouse is getting as much natural light to your plants and vegetables as possible. By giving your glass panels a good old-fashioned scrub to free them of any shade paint, you\u2019ll be able to get far more sunshine into your greenhouse, which keeps the temperature at a good level throughout the winter months.<\/p>\n

Happily, you don\u2019t need anything fancy to clean off the excess shade paint; just a bucket of warm water and a bit of elbow grease will be enough to get the job done. Plus, while you\u2019re at it, it\u2019s worth checking for any broken panes that need replacing, and clearing out the gutters to save them from overflowing in the adverse weather.<\/p>\n

Spruce up your garden borders<\/h2>\n

Start by digging up any annuals, then plant your beds with pansies, daisies, wallflowers or whatever else takes your fancy – don\u2019t be afraid to get creative with your choices! What\u2019s more, by planting your flowers now, your borders will be ready for next spring! Careful not to make your seed heads too visible though, as they can attract all kinds of insects who want to eat them. To finish off, trim the edges of your lawn and spread a nice thick layer of compost over your border to invite the worms in to mix it into your garden.<\/p>\n

Last minute lawn treatment<\/h2>\n

Before the cold takes its toll on your ability to work on your garden, it\u2019s worth taking a bit of time to attend to your lawn to ensure that it\u2019s in the best shape that it can be before the winter comes in. To begin with, rake up any thatch or moss from your lawn, then brush in a sandy top dressing and a bit of autumn lawn feed so that your grass is properly set for the winter. As an added tip, you can drastically improve the drainage and aeration around your paths by creating holes with the prongs of a garden fork.<\/p>\n

Maintain your gardening equipment<\/h2>\n

Before storing all your equipment away for the winter, there\u2019s always time for a bit of TLC to make sure all your tools and equipment are in perfect working order when you get them out next year. Things like shears and secateurs need sharpening, and your spades, forks and other handheld tools will benefit from a good wash with soap and water. Once they\u2019ve dried, paint any wooden handles with a layer of linseed oil to protect the wood, and give any metal aspects a coating with oil to prevent rust.<\/p>\n
