If it’s time to replace your worn-down decking to revitalise the area, here are some tips on how to remove timber decking effectively. (Quick note here – the options suggested may not be suitable for all places, but we’re confident that you’ll see at least one or two useful options you’ll like!)

Hire a skip

For those that don’t mind getting their hands dirty, getting a skip or a skip bag is a good option. However, this method only applies to those that have enough space to place it. So before going ahead and ordering one, always check that you have enough room on the driveway or front garden.

There are a few different benefits of using a skip compared to other ways of removing old timber decking boards. One benefit is the increased safety it brings. If you live with family, you’ll be all too familiar with how adventurous kids are. By using a skip, accidents can be reduced as the old decking planks are harder to reach and mess around with.

Another great benefit is that you won’t need to take it anywhere. Skips are picked up on the agreed-upon date by the supplier. This way you won’t have to worry about making multiple trips to remove the wood by using your own vehicle.

Use a collection service

A collection service is a viable option that eradicates the stress of removing old decking timber. All the pieces that need to be taken away can be picked up at a convenient time and removed quickly.

Many places that offer this service are known to collect old timber (amongst other things) when you’re not home, making the process even easier. Keep in mind that they will still need to be able to access it, so if it’s kept in your garden you’ll need to coordinate with the collection service.

Give it away

Although you may have no use for your old timber boards, someone else may need them. There are a few different ways you can go about advertising the free timber, the best option will depend on the type of area you live in.

If high amounts of traffic go past your house, then a simple ‘free wood’ sign should solve all your problems about removing it. However, if this isn’t the case, then social media could be the answer.

It’s truly surprising the use individuals can get out of old items, so if you’re looking for a quick way for someone to take the old decking off your hands then this may be it.

Use it for another project

If the majority of the boards are still usable then it may be worth keeping them, considering that it can be expensive to buy new ones. Whether this consists of a new workbench, picture frames, or something else, not having to pay for new ones can save you a lot of money.

Local landfill

A lot of local landfills do take old wood, the problem however is getting the old boards to the sites. Unless you have a van or know someone that does, you’ll end up having to make multiple trips.

There’s always the option of trying to cut the wood into pieces so it fits in your vehicle more easily, but to be honest we’d advise against this. The majority of treated wood used for decking include chemicals that are harmful to the environment, so when they’re cut these chemicals are released.

Sell good pieces

As we’ve previously mentioned, decking can be one of life’s bigger purchases, so you may even want to reclaim some of your investment? Although you won’t be able to get anything near its original price, there’s still a chance some money can be made.

The only downside is that you’ll need to do some advertising, either in person or online to find the people willing to buy it from you. Hopefully, when you do find the right buyer, they can also collect it from you which removes the problem of trying to transport the wood.

Finding new decking once the old ones have been disposed of

No matter what method you decide to go with when removing the old decking, the next step will be acquiring new decking boards that are made to last.

Savoy Timber takes great pride in offering quality timber decking at reasonable prices. The wood is guaranteed to last for at least 15 years against rot, keeping gardens looking stylish for years to come.

Take a look at our wide range of decking boards on our website, or visit our stores in Wigan, Preston, and Blackpool.
