By having your kitchen laid out in this way, you can make the best use of your laminate kitchen worktops by ensuring that everything is within reach when you need it. While people may not have their kitchen laid out in specific zones, chances are you’ll have a dedicated food preparation space close to your oven. (So if you like, you’re partway there already!)

While different people often have their own individual opinions on what constitutes a kitchen zone. General consensus, though, says that the five main kitchen zones are as follows:

1. The Preparation Zone – dedicated worktop space

2. The Cooking Zone – Oven, microwave, kettle

3. The Cleaning Zone – Sink and/or dishwasher

4. The Consumables Zone – Areas where you keep food

5. The Non-consumables Zone – Storage for plates, cutlery, utensils

So, let’s explore them in a little more detail!

The Preparation Zone

This is the main zone where you do all your peeling, chopping, and mixing, normally on your laminate kitchen worktops. Kitchen utensils, herbs and spices, as well as other key ingredients of food preparation are all useful to keep close by. It may also help if you have this area next to your oven or hob, as having everything within easy reach will make preparing food as easy as possible.

The Cooking Zone

Like the name suggests, this is where all your cooking appliances are. From your oven to your kettle, all the appliances that you will use when cooking should be in this zone. This is where you’ll probably spend the majority of your time in the kitchen, whipping up some culinary magic, so whatever you use most when cooking should be clustered around this area, whether that’s your prized set of knives, or your trusty casserole dish, or your handy blender. It’s all up to you. It’s a good idea, too, to make sure that this area is adjacent to the preparation zone so you can easily transport food from one place to the next.

The Cleaning Zone

As self-explanatory as the cooking zone, this is the place where you’ll be getting everything respectable again after you’re done cooking. It’ll be the area where your sink is kept, and a dishwasher if you have one. This helps to keep all your dirty dishes in one place, so they can easily be washed and put away, without taking up space on the worktop. You will know where everything is when you need it, while making sure your workspace stays organised.

The Consumables Zone

Pretty straightforward, this one; this is where you can store all your non-perishable foods which don’t require refrigerating. These foods include cereals, herbs, spices, and oils, with the foods you use most often kept within easy reach.

The Non-Consumables Zone
This is mainly used for kitchen utensils, cutlery, and plates, with this area being used to store around a third of all storage items in the kitchen. Items that you use frequently can be kept within comfortable reach. With this area next to the cleaning zone, you can put items away as soon as they’ve been washed and dried.

The Pros of Zones

– Practical layout
– Maximises the space you have available
– Functional storage with items within easy reach
– Cleaning up becomes easier

Now, while having kitchen zones can help when cooking and cleaning, it doesn’t work for everyone or with every room, so don’t worry if you’re struggling to make them work. When it comes right down to it, these are all just helpful guidelines. Ultimately, how you use the space is up to you!

And of course, if you’ve decided to revamp your kitchen with a new set of laminate worktops, that’s exactly where we can help here at Savoy Timber.
