Renovating your kitchen is no easy job. From your budget to your layout to your choice of laminate kitchen worktops<\/a>, there are a lot of choices to make and a lot of plates you\u2019ll need to keep spinning. Unfortunately, that can make it all too easy to make the occasional mistake, and some can have bigger consequences than others! So, here are some of the most frequently underestimated mistakes, and a few suggestions on how you can avoid making them.<\/p>\n

Mistake #1 – Overlooking counter space<\/h2>\n

This is perhaps one of the most singularly common mistakes we see people making when renovating their homes here at Savoy Timber, whether they\u2019re revamping their existing kitchen, or designing a whole new space. Your countertops might look lovely and spacious but let\u2019s be realistic – in many family homes, the chances of them being completely clean and clear all the time are relatively small.<\/p>\n

So, when you\u2019re sizing up your kitchen worktops for what appliances you\u2019re going to store or display on them, don\u2019t forget to assess how much elbow room you\u2019re actually going to need preparing or cooking meals, as well as washing up. And if you\u2019re planning on using the space for dining or socialising, you\u2019ll need some room for that too!<\/p>\n

Mistake #2 – Underestimating how much storage you\u2019ll need<\/h2>\n

We\u2019re betting that at least one Christmas, you\u2019ve unwrapped a present to find it\u2019s some kind of kitchen gadget you never knew you needed. Or, for that matter, wanted. Things like that constitute just one reason why so many of us can end up accumulating a lot of Stuff (with a capital S), alongside our cutlery and knives and crockery. Now, there\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with that, unless you forget to account for it in the storage space of your new kitchen. If you\u2019re not careful, you might find that you\u2019ve got a surplus of stuff, and nowhere to put all of it.<\/p>\n

To avoid that happening, it\u2019s a good idea to make a plan of exactly what you\u2019ve got, and where you\u2019re thinking about putting it. That can help you identify potentially thorny issues early on. You might want to think about slightly more creative storage solutions, like in a kitchen island. Or, you could stick some of your bigger knives and kitchen tools to a magnet-wall, or utilise some floor-space with a movable trolley.<\/p>\n

Mistake #3 – Not having a lightbulb moment with your plugs and power<\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s a bit of a nightmare scenario for you. You\u2019ve almost finished the renovation of your entire kitchen, you\u2019re just about to start plugging in your appliances – and you suddenly realise the microwave won\u2019t fit where you wanted it to be. Nor your blender, or your toastie maker. So, to avoid having to make annoying compromises at the end of the project, it\u2019s a good idea to think about workflow early on. Where are you planning on doing the majority of your chopping, before moving on to the blender? What part of the kitchen are you going to use for brewing up, and where\u2019s the kettle going to go? Making these decisions early will help you to think about how the space flows, and make things a lot easier down the line.<\/p>\n

Mistake #4 – Going over budget<\/h2>\n

When you\u2019ve got a bit of money behind you, it can be really easy to splash out on your kitchen. After all, there are very few better places to invest your money than right here at home. But even if you\u2019re pretty flush, it\u2019s still best to have a budget, as it can be easy to end up spending more than you thought you would. And if you were pushing the limits a bit to begin with, that can end up in some serious money being spent. To avoid falling victim to it yourself, it\u2019s not a bad idea to create an inventory list that encompasses both furniture and contents, so you\u2019ve got a solid budget to work with right from the off.
