Now, you’ll be happy to hear that composite decking is generally quite resistant to this type of damage, but that doesn’t mean it’s invulnerable. So to save you a headache later on, here are some of our top tips on the best ways to protect your decking from the harm caused by casual bumps and scrapes.

Use furniture pads for chairs and tables on your decking

If you enjoy relaxing on furniture out on your decking, it’s never a bad idea to invest in some furniture pads. Tables and chairs with metal bottoms or legs are particularly prone to creating scratches or other types of marks on your deck.

Happily, you’ve got no shortage of choice when it comes to finding protectors to suit your furniture, as there’s a wide range available on the market – including slides, inserts, cups, caps or felt pads. Basically, whatever kind of furniture you’ve got, you can be reasonably sure that there will be a protector to match it. They tend to be attached using some form of adhesive, but some can be directly screwed to the underside of the legs, making it even easier to move your furniture back and forth across your deck with minimal risk of damage to the composite. Rubber and plastic pads tend to be some of the most popular choices for outdoor furniture, largely because of their water resistant properties.

Consider rugs and other floor coverings

This is another popular choice for homeowners, and it’s not hard to see why – it combines practicality and style all in one. You can carefully choose the colour, style and thickness of your floor covering to match the appearance and feel you want for the space, and it’s a useful alternative to floor coverings when it comes to protecting your deck from the weight of your furniture. Not only that, but it can also serve as a handy barrier to protect your decking from other types of accidents that might affect its appearance, such as food, oils, or other types of liquids.

Plus, if you’ve got pets then rugs and other floor coverings can provide an excellent place for dogs or other pets to sit out and enjoy the sunshine on your decking, without the risk of it getting too hot underneath them. It’s useful to preventing scratches to your decking that could be caused by their claws, too.
A couple of other bits of advice – if you’re moving anything across your decking, whether it’s furniture or any other heavy object, don’t forget to lift, not drag! Furniture protectors and rugs are useful for protecting your decking from the worst of any scrapes or impacts, but at the same time it’s best to do what you can to minimise the risk of scratches occurring in the first place. And if you’ve got small children, it’s generally best not to let them out onto your decking unsupervised if you can avoid it. As many parents know to their cost, it’s surprising how much damage that curious children can do in a short space of time!

If you ever need any replacement decking boards though, you know exactly where you can find them. Here at Savoy we’ve got a fantastic range of composite decking kits in a variety of colours, ranging from walnut to mocha to charcoal black.
