Whatever your own vision for your garden, chances are that you want an outdoor space that\u2019s as comfortable as it is attractive to look at. After all, don\u2019t we all? And of course, if you\u2019ve spent any time on the blog at all, you may well have seen us discussing plants as a great way to add a bit of extra visual flair to your outdoor space. Like most other things in life though, it does take a bit of forthought, not to mention a careful eye. Here are some of the top mistakes to avoid!<\/p>\n

Going overboard<\/h2>\n

This is one of the single most common mistakes that gardeners make, and it\u2019s not hard to see why. If you\u2019ve ever watched the RHS Chelsea Show Gardens, you may have noticed that they\u2019ve got a tendency to pack in impressive numbers of plants into relatively compact spaces, for maximum visual impact.<\/p>\n

However, while that might work quite well for the polished world of daytime television, it can easily end up looking too crowded and overwhelming. Instead, it\u2019s far better to focus your attention on a much smaller number of flowers or shrubs. If you want to create your own sort of visual impact, you can cluster several of the same type into small groups, or repeat plants of the same type at regular intervals. Don\u2019t forget to make a note of how much the plant will grow before you actually buy it, so you can accurately work out how much space it will take up.<\/p>\n

Underestimating vigorous shrubs<\/h3>\n

Some types of plants are a little more\u2026 well, eager than others. Plants well known for this eagerness include buddleia, Clematis Montana, and of course the notorious rambling roses (the name says it all, really). Plants like these are typically labelled as \u2018spreading readily\u2019 or \u2018self sowing\u2019.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t want them to overgrow large parts of your garden, this can make them a real headache to maintain. (Another reason why it\u2019s best to double check the eventual size of plants before you buy them!) So, either stick to slow growers, or get your garden ladder ready and be prepared to be very hot on garden maintenance.<\/p>\n

Neglecting container plants<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s no secret that people tend to overwater houseplants, which is sometimes euphemistically described as \u2018killing with kindness\u2019. Part of the problem is that since they\u2019re in pots, they don\u2019t have any drainage, and that means they tend to sit in water and rot.<\/p>\n

Weirdly enough, the opposite is true of outdoor container plants, which don\u2019t tend to get the benefit of enough water. Even though they\u2019re left outdoors to enjoy the rain, it can be easy to forget about what some people call a \u2018rain shield\u2019 \u2013 like a porch, guttering or shrub that can block it from getting all the water it needs.<\/p>\n

So if you\u2019re relying on a container plant to give your outdoor space a bit of a splash of colour, don\u2019t forget to let it enjoy a splash or two itself occasionally. Container plants are entirely dependent on you, so check them regularly!<\/p>\n

Digging too much in winter<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s time to face facts \u2013 the warm, sunny weather is finally on the way out for this year, so you might already be thinking about when you\u2019re planning on tackling the soil during the rainier months, so it\u2019s ready for spring next year.<\/p>\n

But don\u2019t be too eager with those garden implements. By all means fork over the veg garden to clear away some of those persistent perennials, but hold off on doing anything too much more intensive. The winter frost will do a perfectly capable job of dealing with any clay, and if you start raking too early, you can all too easily end up creating a cap of sorts on the soil. This then gets compacted into crust by the winter rain, which can make life tough for your plants, and ultimately have a noticeable impact on your garden by the time the sunshine comes back around.<\/p>\n

Instead, experts recommend just plumping a decent amount of compost on top of the soil by the time the Spring sunshine comes around. Sometimes the simplest solutions really are the best.<\/p>\n
