Really, the exact height of your worktop will depend on a number of factors, not least of which is what\u2019s right for you. Here, we take a closer look about the varying heights of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/kitchen-worktops\/laminate-kitchen-worktops.html\"><strong>worktops<\/strong><\/a> in modern kitchens, and why it\u2019s so important.<\/p>\n<h2>The standard kitchen worktop height and depth<\/h2>\n<p>As we\u2019ve touched on above, the standard height for a kitchen worktop is about 910mm, measured from the floor to the top of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/kitchen-worktops\/laminate-kitchen-worktops.html\"><strong>worktop<\/strong><\/a>. We get this figure from totting up the measurements of the following components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The plinth (150mm)<\/li>\n<li>The base cabinet (720mm)<\/li>\n<li>The worktop itself (40mm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, it\u2019s important for us to say that this figure might vary slightly depending on exactly what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/kitchen-worktops\/laminate-kitchen-worktops.html\"><strong>worktop<\/strong><\/a> you go for. Different types of worktops have slightly different thicknesses &#8211; laminate kitchen worktops of the kind we stock tend to measure at about 40mm. However, in recent years there\u2019s also been more of a preference for the on-trend <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/kitchen-worktops\/zenith-12-5mm-solid-compact-worktops.html\">Ultra Slim worktops<\/a><\/strong>, and there\u2019s no prizes for guessing that these tend to be much thinner in height &#8211; usually around 20mm, which puts their standard total worktop height at about 890mm.<\/p>\n<p>The total height is also dependent to a certain extent on the type of kitchen cabinets involved, and the overall style of the kitchen. For example, some contemporary kitchens tend to use lower plinths and taller cabinets, which can sometimes end up drastically affecting the overall height. (In a few cases, they even cancel each other out so they end up at roughly the same size.)<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, the standard depth of a kitchen worktop is between 600mm to 650mm. This typically involves an overhang of between 20-30mm, depending on your preference. A worktop that\u2019s too short can cause you to bend uncomfortably over it, which is bad for your posture in the short term and can actually lead to permanent back or shoulder pain in the long term. Similarly, a worktop that\u2019s too tall can cause difficulties for you when you\u2019re preparing food &#8211; for example, you might not be able to get a proper angle when you\u2019re cutting down on a piece of meat or other foodstuff, which can result in short term wrist pain in the very best of circumstances. (It could even cause you to have an accident &#8211; which nobody wants with knives.)<\/p>\n<p>This is why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/kitchen-worktops\/laminate-kitchen-worktops.html\"><strong>kitchen worktops<\/strong><\/a> are about 910mm &#8211; it\u2019s close enough to comfortable for the average person. However, if you\u2019d class yourself as a tall or short person, you might want to think about how to alter your kitchen to accommodate you. It might be a fair bit of cost and hassle in the short term, but trust us &#8211; it\u2019s worth it in the long run!<\/p>\n<h3>What height should my kitchen worktop be?<\/h3>\n<p>Well, that rather depends on you! This ensures that you\u2019ve got sufficient height over it to be comfortable, without towering over it so much that you have to bend uncomfortably down.
