When the sun is shining, and you\u2019re spending more time in the garden, it\u2019s easy to spot projects that might have slipped your mind during the other eight or so months of the year. One major project that often stands out is giving your timber decking<\/strong><\/a> some much-needed attention.<\/p>\n

Our decks are often well-loved parts of our garden, so signs of wear and tear can become quite apparent over time. As you set up for a summer BBQ, you\u2019ll want everything to look its best. Thankfully, more often than not, taking your decking from good to gorgeous just requires a little extra care, whether it\u2019s a thorough scrub, a fresh coat of stain, or a brand-new layer of paint!<\/p>\n

Perfect painting weather<\/h2>\n

If you’re an avid reader of our blog, you’ll have definitely heard us say that when painting your deck, it’s essential to consider the weather conditions. The perfect temperature range for painting is anywhere from 10\u00b0C to 30\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

If it’s any hotter than that, you’re best off getting out the BBQ. Painting on extremely hot days can cause your paint to dry too quickly and not adhere properly, so no matter how good of a job you do, it’s going to turn out wrong. Similarly, painting in freezing temperatures can effectively stop the paint from curing. Low humidity is also important to prevent moisture from being trapped in the wood. So, when picking your painting day, you’ll want to ensure that no rain is expected for at least 24-48 hours after painting to allow the paint to fully dry.<\/p>\n

How to choose the best paint<\/h2>\n

Using the correct type of paint for your deck is essential for a durable and attractive finish you won’t have to redo in six months. As a rule of thumb, always use exterior-grade paint specifically designed for decking, as it is formulated to withstand foot traffic and harsh weather conditions. Regular interior paint left over from the time you gave the kitchen a fresh lick of paint won’t hold up as well outdoors. Investing in high-quality paint will provide better coverage, last longer, and ultimately save you time and money on future maintenance – so it’s well worth it!<\/p>\n

Prep for success<\/h2>\n

Properly preparing your deck’s surface before painting is key to achieving a smooth, long-lasting finish you can be proud of. Start by thoroughly cleaning the deck to remove dirt, mildew, and any old paint. Use a mixture of water and mild soap, and after cleaning, allow the deck to dry completely. If you’re going to bring out the big guns, a.k.a – the power washer, make sure you have the pressure low enough that it won’t damage your boards, and always read the manufacturer\u2019s instructions for your decking before you start if you can! After it’s sparkling, sand any rough spots to create a smooth surface, which helps the new paint adhere better.<\/p>\n

Apply your paint like a pro<\/h2>\n

The application process involves several necessary steps to make sure you get the seamless finish you’re looking for. Start by applying a primer, especially if your deck is made of softwood like cedar or redwood; it’ll improve paint adhesion and durability. Plan to use at least two coats of paint for even coverage; even if one looks enough, it’s always best to go back in to really make the colour pop. Remember, though, to always allow sufficient drying time between coats (usually, the back of the paint tin will tell you how long you need to wait). Applying two coats enhances your deck’s appearance and also its resistance to wear and weather, extending the lifespan of your hard work.<\/p>\n

Keep it looking spick-and-span<\/h2>\n

Painted decks generally require more frequent upkeep than stained or natural wood decks, especially here in the UK, where the weather can be less than savoury. Regularly clean your deck to remove dirt and prevent mildew buildup; this can be done with the hose pipe. Be prepared to give your deck periodic touch-ups now and then to keep it looking its best. Consistent maintenance, whether it’s the occasional sweep, hose down or touch-up with a paintbrush, will ensure your deck remains a beautiful and enjoyable part of your outdoor space for years to come!<\/p>\n
