And if you already have an existing kitchen island or peninsular, it’s a great way to make the best of your existing space.

To help you decide what breakfast bar will fit in your kitchen, here’s what you’ll need to consider before you buy!

Take measurements!

The best thing to do is to draw a quick sketch of the floor plan for your kitchen and/or dining space. Be sure to include a general shape of your cabinet layout, and clearly mark the locations of the sink, fridge, hob, oven.

Then take measurements of length, width and height of your existing worktops! You’ll want to know all of these measurements as it may impact where you decide to put your breakfast bar.

The majority of kitchen worktops come in a standard depth of 600mm (60cm). Many of our worktops come in a breakfast bar style that’s a little bit larger at 900mm (90cm). These sizes are perfect for having a kitchen island with cabinets on one side and seating for a breakfast bar on the other.

What type of kitchen do you have?

Choosing the right breakfast bar for your kitchen will largely depend on the shape, size, and layout of your existing kitchen. In the UK, there are four very common kitchen layouts including single wall, galley, L-shaped, and U-shaped.

Here’s a few ideas to help you find a creative way to fit a breakfast bar in to your kitchen!

Single wall (no island)

If space is at a premium, you might want to build a simple freestanding breakfast bar, similar to a table. A freestanding breakfast bar gives you the luxury and ability to move it around the room as you please. Plus, you’ll be able to build it a custom size to fit the exact depth, height, and length of the space you have available.

If your kitchen only sits on a single wall, another option is to consider adding a fixed island (or peninsular) with a breakfast bar. You’ll need a decent amount of space for this option, typically 600 mm (as that’s the standard width of a worktop).

Galley Kitchen

Galley kitchens are quite popular in older houses and often don’t have much in the way of extra room. Generally, you might find it quite difficult to have a breakfast bar in a galley kitchen unless you have ample space between your existing cabinetry, simply because if someone is sitting down you may need room to walk around them.

However, if you have a galley kitchen that opens into another room, you could opt for a ledge-style breakfast bar that overhangs your existing cabinets.

L-Shaped

There are two very common solutions to incorporate a breakfast bar into your existing L-shaped kitchen.

Firstly, if you design a small island, simply incorporate seating to one side. The second way is to make your L-shaped kitchen into a U-shaped kitchen. You can do this by adding a peninsular or a wall-mounted breakfast bar to the space.

If you don’t have room for either, you could build a narrow free-standing breakfast bar that would fit perfectly in your space.

U-Shaped

A U-shaped kitchen can either be fitted to all external walls, or it may have an open side.

If you have an open sided U-shaped kitchen you may only have to extend your existing worktop to accommodate a few bar stools. Alternatively, you might need to remove a few cabinets or the storage on one side to make room for a few chairs.

If you have a U-Shaped kitchen that has walls on all sides you may need to create a G-shaped kitchen. You can do this by adding a peninsular to one of the walls to create additional seating. Depending on your layout, you may need to put the peninsular at an angle to ensure you have workable space all the way around.

Give it a try!

Now that you know what kind of breakfast bar might work in your kitchen, it’s time to start planning. Many of our popular worktop styles come in a breakfast bar size that’s a little wider than a standard size. Be sure to check the exact dimensions of the worktop you want to make sure it will fit in the space you have!

Next, grab your tape measure and some blue painter’s tape! If you know where you’d like your breakfast bar to go, lightly tape down an outline of it. Then spend some time (a few minutes, hours, or days if you need) walking around it. You might find after a little while that your breakfast bar might work better in a different place, at a slight angle, or using a different solution.

At Savoy Timber we stock a wide range of laminate worktops in a large range of colours, textures, styles, and types to fit with almost any kitchen!

You can pop by any of our stores in Blackpool, Wigan or Preston and can speak with our friendly staff to find out more about solid laminate worktops or to see these styles in person!

As the heart of the home, the kitchen can become a welcoming place to eat, cook, and share quality time with loved ones.
