Even though most worktops are now built to last for years, there comes a time when you’ll need to replace it.

We’ve put together a list of the most common issues that bring customers into our stores looking for a new worktop. Let’s take a look.

Cracking

The first common issue and very obvious sign its time to replace your laminate worktop is cracking. As we’ve discussed, eventually due to dust, dirt, food, bacteria, or simply time may cause your worktop to crack. This cracking is likely to occur on any exposed edges of your worktop like high traffic corners or edges near the sink or hob.

Sometimes you maybe able to repair the small cracks yourself using a variety of methods including epoxy. However, those solutions, even when done by a professional, won’t last forever. And should be thought of as plaster for a minor injury and not a permanent solution — particularly if the crack happens near a water source or on a joint.

If you are looking for a cost-effective worktop replacement check out our worktop deals!

Scorched or burned

It’s likely, we’ve all seen it — a scorched a worktop damaged by setting a hot pan on the counter!

This type of damage may be repaired similar to how it can be for cracking. However, the repairs with scorch marks will never fully disappear and may be harder to disguise especially as time passes because the worktop will be made of slightly different materials than the items used on the repair.

Depending on the depth or severity of the burn or scorch mark you may need to replace your worktop. We always recommend if the burn has pierced through the top layer of laminate coating and exposed the particle board underneath you should consider a replacement. Because it’s likely the burn has compromised the integrity of the coating making it less durable to future damage and spills. If left untreated this could invite bacteria and could cause unsanitary conditions.

The Zenith solid core worktops by Wilsonart are more heat resistant than standard laminate worktops and could be a perfect option!

Stained

Laminate worktops should never be cleaned with abrasives like steel wool, scouring pads or powder, and rarely is it okay to clean them with bleach or bleach-based cleaners. The reason is those abrasive methods can create micro-scratches in the surface making the likelihood of stains greater in the future.

If this has happened at some point during the life of your worktop its possible for it to become far more prone to staining. And in the case of these persistent stains, it’s always a good idea to replace your worktop. Chances are if a stain is showing and difficult to remove there could be other issues like bacteria or mould as well.

At Savoy Timber, we’ve got an amazing range of worktops for you to choose from or browse if you think its time to get a replacement! Or if you want to see them up close pay a visit to one of our DIY stores in Preston, Wigan or Blackpool, where our friendly members of staff are always happy to lend a hand!

Kitchen worktops generally have to withstand a lot of daily wear and tear especially if you are an avid cook or baker!
