The installation process can take a bit of time and while we don’t recommend you cut corners to do so, there are plenty of things you can do to help save time on this project!

Check your measurements

In the planning stages take the time to measure everything! Double check. Triple check. Leave it for 24 hours and then check one last time.

By measuring correctly in these early stages it can help prevent a lot of problems down the road.

If you are simply replacing an existing worktop and making no changes to the shape or size – simply measure the old worktop. But, if for some reason, you need to change the size or shape of the worktop, like to fit a new design be sure to maintain the right amount of overhang along the front of your kitchen cabinets.

We recommend you should have about 10mm-20mm worktop overhang in case your cabinets turn out to not be completely straight. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend having at least 25mm of overhang at either end of your new worktop.

Get the right tools

Before starting any DIY project it’s important for you to know exactly what tools you will need and how to properly use them!

Not having the right tools for the job may mean your project is delayed while you source

Since there are quite a few large tools needed to install a kitchen worktop we’ve given you a quick breakdown of the largest ones and how you will use them in your project.

Handheld circular saw

When installing a kitchen worktop a handheld circular saw will be used for all of your long cuts. You’ll likely use this to trim the back of the laminate so it sits flush with the wall and on the edges if it’s too long or needs to be made to fit your space. Be sure to buy and use brand new saw blades for the best cutting results on this project!

Hand Router

You may not need a hand router for laminate worktops unless you have a compact laminate worktop.

The primary function of the hand router is to cut the worktop to fit an undermount sink to compact laminate worktop and to make the drainer grooves.

Using this tool will ensure you have a nice smooth edge and not a jagged mess or a broken saw! Be sure to double check the placement of your sink before you begin setting up the routing part of your project.

Palm Sander

The palm sander has two primary jobs when installing worktops. You can use it to even out and smooth the edges of the worktop once they’ve been cut by your handsaw.

If you have a compact laminate worktop, you’ll need a palm sander to put the finishing touches on the exposed edges of your worktop. For most jobs you will need a few different standard grits including 180, 240, and 320 – and a scotchbrite.

Biscuit Machine

A biscuit machine will be used to create the joints for your worktop to make it fit into “L” or “U” shapes. We recommend measure out and cut at least 5 slots using a size 20 cutting slot with size 20 biscuits to join two worktops.

Jigsaw

You’ll need a jigsaw to cut out a hole for the sink and hob for most laminate worktops. We recommend you have several lengths and sizes to be sure you have the right blade to get through the surface.

Clamps

In terms of clamps there are two common types of clamps for this project – “G” clamp and suction clamps. The “G” clamps be used to hold all the surfaces while cutting for safety and a precise cuts. Specifically, the G clamps will help hold templates, the laminate worktop, and jig for the routing portion of the project.

The suction clamps are used during the final joining portion to ensure the worktop is level.

Tools can make or stall any DIY project which is why it’s a good idea to test your tools a few days before you plan on starting your project – especially with large jobs like this. Plus, if you find out early a tool isn’t working correctly you have time to find a replacement or can rent one to get your job done. This way you can be confident you have all the right tools to do the job!

Jointing fabrication services

Last, but not least you can save time by getting your worktop cut to size and jointed by our experienced, expert joiners. We use a commercial wall saw and commercial jigsaws for smaller cuts, giving a vastly superior finish, perfect for your home!

The worktop will then be delivered as one piece directly to your home all you need to do is get it in the right place and finalise the fitting – job done!

Here at Savoy Timber, we stock a range of worktop styles and finishes to suit all budgets and projects!
