At Savoy Timber, we couldn’t agree more. Plus, you can’t deny that your kitchen worktops have a tendency to get pretty unclean very quickly. This can make the entire kitchen look messy, and we all know how quickly insects and other little pests can jump on any crumbs, too! Whether you’ve got laminate kitchen worktops or they’re made from another material, it’s important to know how they react to various cleaning substances – it’s the best way to avoid damaging them, while leaving them looking sparkling clean!

How to clean sealed wood worktops

Wood has always been quite a popular option for kitchen worktops here in the UK. (We even stock our own real solid oak wooden kitchen worktops here at Savoy Timber!) They’re a particular favourite for traditional kitchens, but can look quite at home in modern ones, too, and can give a great sense of warmth and homeliness to the space.

The tradeoff, though, is that they do take a bit of care to clean. In order to clean them most effectively whilst minimising any possible damage, you need to dilute a bleach solution of 20ml (one tablespoon or half a tablespoon) of bleach in 5 litres (1 gallon) of water, and apply it with a J-cloth to any stubborn grime. Don’t hang about as you do it, or you risk the bleach changing the colour of the wood! Plus, don’t forget to re-oil the worktops every three months or so to keep them stain and water-resistant.

How to clean marble worktops

Another tricky one. Marble worktops are usually quite expensive, which means you’ll want to take extra care to avoid any potentially costly repairs (or unsightly marks if you can’t afford them). Bleach might be a bit of a risky tactic when it comes to marble, so instead wipe it down with a sudsy solution from a bowl of mild washing up liquid. As a general rule, anything that claims to be soft on your skin will also be soft on marble. However, the same rules as above apply – rinse it away immediately afterwards. Detergent residue can also easily damage marble, so make sure to bear that in mind!

The best way to clean stainless steel worktops

If you own stainless steel worktops, you’ll probably have already noticed that they can be exceptionally prone to finger marks, especially if they’re sticky. To get rid of them, or any other stubborn stains, put a dab of cooking or baby oil on a clean cloth and rub it across the whole surface. Pay particular attention to marked areas! If you find you need to do a larger, full-scale cleaning, you can again clean stainless steel worktops with a solution of mild washing up liquid, before buffing it with a soft cloth.

Keep natural solids or man-made surfaces looking pristine

An antibacterial spray cleaner is your best buddy here – and make sure you dry it thoroughly! If you want, a bit of extra added disinfectant never goes amiss either. Alternatively, you can wipe it down with hot, soapy water, and use a clean cloth or paper towels to dry. If there are any stains causing you issues, you can remove them by gently scrubbing them with a cream cleaner, or a paste of bicarbonate and soda.

That’s all there is to it! Your kitchen will be sparkling again before you know it. This is especially the case if you’ve got laminate kitchen worktops, which tend to be amongst the easiest to clean.
