Happily though, it\u2019s easy enough to fix \u2013 as long as you\u2019ve got the know-how and maybe a little bit of elbow grease to go the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need to fix a stuck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/internal-doors.html\">internal door<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A pencil or pen (to mark where it\u2019s sticking)<\/li>\n<li>A ruler to join the points<\/li>\n<li>A screwdriver or drill (to take it off its hinges)<\/li>\n<li>A bench or two sawhorses to lay the door<\/li>\n<li>A hand planer or a circular saw<\/li>\n<li>Fresh primer and paint<\/li>\n<li>A paintbrush (obviously)<\/li>\n<li>A sander to finish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Right then &#8211; let&#8217;s get started!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Wondering Why Your Internal Door Is Sticking?<\/h2>\n<p>Often, this is caused by an excess of paint or grime on the door frame, or on the edge of the door. If the room is particularly humid, that can sometimes cause the wood to expand, which doesn\u2019t help either! Sanding away the excess paint is the easiest way to deal with it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1441 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hand-planer-compressed.png\" alt=\"hand planer\" width=\"730\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hand-planer-compressed.png 730w, https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/hand-planer-compressed-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/>If the door is sticking badly and you need to give it a really good pull each time, it\u2019s likely that you\u2019ll need to sand the door itself. Obviously before you do anything else, you\u2019ll need to work out roughly how much of the door you\u2019re going to sand away. An easy way to give yourself a good benchmark is to look at where there are scuff marks on the door itself. This will show you exactly where the door is sticking, so it\u2019s a great way to give yourself a reference point. Mark them with your pen or pencil, and if you want you can mark the distance between them using a ruler, so you know exactly where to plane it.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s on the top, you might even be able to plane it without taking the door off its hinges. Even though this option might appeal, though, it can be a bit tricky \u2013 not to mention risky if you\u2019re standing on a stepladder, so if in any doubt we\u2019d recommend taking the door off its hinges with your drill or screwdriver, and finding a good place to lay it before you get cracking.<\/p>\n<h2>Sanding The Door Down To A Good Size<\/h2>\n<p>Lay your door out on two sawhorses or a bench so that\u2019s stable, and then plane the edge using your hand planer. If you need to remove a large amount, you might find a circular saw handy, but remember that what you gain in speed, you sacrifice in control. As you\u2019re planing away the edge, don\u2019t forget to leave enough clearance so that you can reprime and re-paint it later. Otherwise, you\u2019ll find yourself having to repeat the process all over again, and let\u2019s be honest, you probably treasure your Saturday afternoon a bit too much to be wasting time like that.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/planing-down-internal-door-compressed.png\" alt=\"planing down internal door\" width=\"730\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/planing-down-internal-door-compressed.png 730w, https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/planing-down-internal-door-compressed-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve finished sanding the planed edge, all that\u2019s left is to prime the wood and re-paint it (preferably with the brush, in case you were wondering. It\u2019s notoriously tricky otherwise). Then, replace the door onto its hinges, and step back to admire your handiwork. This is probably a good time to check that it opens and closes properly, too.
