Now that spring is in the air, you might already be thinking about getting your decking project ready in time for proper sunshine. But before you start finalising your plans, it\u2019s a good idea to have a proper think about all the options, so that your project pans out smoothly and you get tip-top results. With that in mind, in this two-part series we\u2019ve collected a couple of key considerations you\u2019ll want to look at before you get cracking.<\/p>\n

1. What Do You Want Your Decking For?<\/h2>\n

It sounds like an obvious question, but you might be surprised at how many people skim past it! You don\u2019t have to choose it for just one purpose, obviously, but what you want to use it for will probably influence a whole load of other aspects, like its size and location (just to name a couple). Are you after a space for entertaining, or dining with your family? Maybe you want it to dabble in a bit of container gardening, or even just kick back and relax on your own, away from prying eyes. 2. Location And Privacy<\/h2>\n

The location of your decking is another big one on your list \u2013 and one you\u2019re hardly going to overlook. It\u2019s possible to forget about privacy, though, until the project is already well underway, so it\u2019s a good plan to keep that one in mind early! First of all, look at the space you plan to place your decking project<\/a>. How close is it to the house, and how exposed is it to weather conditions? For example, is it in the shade, or is it sufficiently sheltered from the rain? Actually on that note, a traditional pergola kit might be a wise choice if you want to give yourself a bit of extra shelter.<\/p>\n

Once that\u2019s sorted, think about privacy, and protected your decking is from neighbours or passers-by (and of course, whether you\u2019re that fussed about it anyway). How visible are you when sitting out on your decking? How visible are other people to you? Does your decking overlook anyone else\u2019s garden, or does anyone else\u2019s overlook yours? If so, repositioning your decking might be a good plan \u2013 or failing that, investing in a bit of privacy screening.<\/p>\n

3. Budget and Cost<\/h2>\n

This is the big one! What sort of budget you have will be influenced by a lot of factors, including the size of the deck and the intricacy of its design (which we\u2019ll explore in more detail in next week\u2019s blog), and what sort of materials you want to use. Before you can make practical decisions on all of those, though, you\u2019ll need to work out what sort of money you\u2019re willing to invest.<\/p>\n

Overspending on decking projects is often a nightmare scenario, because either you finish the project and you\u2019re faced with a bit of financial fallout, or you\u2019re forced to leave the project unfinished for several weeks or months until you can get the funds together again \u2013 which is unattractive at best, and can even be unsafe at worst, even in a family home. For those reasons alone, it\u2019s definitely worth getting your figures straightened out early!<\/p>\n
