At a glance, they don\u2019t look too different from the other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/internal-doors.html\">internal doors<\/a> amongst our range \u2013 so what makes these better at protecting you if the worst should happen? Mostly they\u2019re all divided into two categories: active and passive. Active fire systems include fire alarms, fire extinguishers and sprinklers; that sort of thing. Passive systems, on the other hand, include our fire doors. Rather than extinguish the flames, fire doors have a dual role \u2013 to slow the spread of the flames by acting as a barrier to other rooms, and also to provide a means of escape if necessary for any people still in the building.<\/p>\n<p>These dual roles are reflected in its design, which has to be sturdy enough to stop the fire but otherwise easy to use under everyday circumstances. Many of our internal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/internal-doors.html\">fire doors<\/a> here at Savoy Timber fit into the most common category, FD30, which indicates that they can reliably resist fire for at least thirty minutes. So then, how do they work?<\/p>\n<h3>The Hidden Workings Behind Internal Fire Doors<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1226 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/What-Makes-Fire-Doors-Different-From-Other-Internal-Doors-1.jpg\" alt=\"lock being tested\" width=\"730\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/What-Makes-Fire-Doors-Different-From-Other-Internal-Doors-1.jpg 730w, https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/What-Makes-Fire-Doors-Different-From-Other-Internal-Doors-1-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We know there\u2019s one question in particular that might be flitting around your head right now \u2013 how can a door be fire rated if it\u2019s wooden? Wood burns, right? Well, yes, but there\u2019s a lot more to it than that. Most fire doors have a solid-core construction which can include particleboard, flaxboard chipboard, and solid timber. On top of that, they\u2019re also fitted with what\u2019s called intumescent strips. When these strips get hot, they expand to seal the gap between the door and the frame, blocking as much of the fire and smoke as possible. It\u2019s all quite clever.<\/p>\n<p>These strips are what enables us to make the 30-minute guarantee for all of our FD30 fire doors, and trust us when we say that we take your safety very seriously here at Savoy Timber, and as you\u2019d expect, all of our fire doors have been constructed and tested to all the required specifications.
