But that doesn\u2019t mean you should forget about it entirely! Quite the opposite \u2013 you can only enjoy your decking in the good weather if you\u2019ve been taking care of it throughout the winter months as well, so this week on the blog at Savoy Timber we thought it was worth taking you through a few of the key ways on how to do just that.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Keep Your Decking As Clean As Possible<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1125 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Easy-Way-To-Protect-Your-Decking-In-Winter-2.jpg\" alt=\"washing decking\" width=\"730\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Easy-Way-To-Protect-Your-Decking-In-Winter-2.jpg 730w, https:\/\/savoytimber.com\/help-and-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Easy-Way-To-Protect-Your-Decking-In-Winter-2-300x123.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Falling leaves, windy weather and heavy rain all throughout winter often make this a headache (to put it politely), but trust us, it\u2019s well worth the effort! Autumn and winter debris doesn\u2019t just look nasty, but leaves, twigs and other bits and pieces can become wet and together form a mulch layer, which you definitely don\u2019t want seeping into your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/decking.html\">garden decking<\/a>. Keep it clear with a quick brush a few times a week at least. The bonus to doing this is that you also stop fungus from forming, which reduces the risk of you or anyone else slipping on it when it rains. If you\u2019ve got a jet washer handy, using it on a low setting can reliably and efficiently clear away dirt. Don\u2019t set it too high though, or you could damage the wood!<\/p>\n<p>As for rain, you\u2019ll be fine with the occasional shower, but heavy downpours on unsealed decking will quickly start to show its mark, whatever the quality of the wood. If you\u2019re not sure whether or not your deck is unsealed, you can do a water test using a glass of water. Pour a tiny bit onto the deck, and check whether it beads on the surface or sinks down into it. If it\u2019s the latter, you\u2019ll want to purchase some sealer to protect your deck. They shield your decking from the worst effects of all weathers, as well as reducing the casual wear and tear from foot traffic. What\u2019s more, being translucent, you don\u2019t have to worry about them changing the appearance of the wood. Being a sealing agent, it stops water from penetrating into your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savoytimber.com\/decking\/decking-boards.html\">decking boards<\/a>, preventing mould and fungus from becoming an issue before it\u2019s even started forming. It\u2019s all these qualities that makes Liberon oil a consistently popular choice amongst our customers, even when compared to other decking protectors.<\/p>\n<p>A quick word of advice \u2013 if you\u2019re going to apply the product, it\u2019s best not to do it in damp conditions, or if you think rain is going to hit before the oil has fully dried.
