Doors play a more important part in our lives than many of us give them credit for \u2013 they\u2019re one of those things that you\u2019d notice if they were gone! Doors are our first line of defence against intruders (and possibly certain salespeople). A good-quality internal door allows you to keep young children in the playroom while you answer the phone, safe in the knowledge that you won\u2019t come back to find them experimenting with the knife rack in the kitchen next door.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s the obvious stuff. Less obviously, doors are surprisingly handy in the event of a fire. It won\u2019t hold the flames at bay forever, but it certainly makes itself a major obstacle, buying time for you to get yourself and your family to safety. Flames need oxygen to survive, and by shutting all the doors in a room you can restrict the airflow, ensuring it gets as little as possible and slowing down its spread. And you know what they say \u2013 there\u2019s usually no fire without thick, black smoke (well, it\u2019s sort of what they say). You can shut out chilly breezes with draught excluders in winter, or open all the doors in a room to let out accumulated heat in summer, cooling everything down.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re also a brilliant control of light into a room. A quick fact for you \u2013 as humans, we\u2019re hardwired to respond more positively to natural light than we are to artificial light. That\u2019s why it\u2019s always nicer to come home to a naturally brighter room after a long day at work.
