Garden tidy-up do’s and don’ts to protect wildlife and prep for autumn

For most of us, summer is the perfect season for our gardens. Whether it’s a family barbecue or a lazy sunbathe on your composite decking, it’s easy to get lost outdoors in the warmer months. As the weather changes, it’s only natural that we venture outside less, leaving our gardens neglected and unprepared for the colder months. Here at Savoy Timber, we’ve got some handy tips to keep your outdoor space tidy throughout the autumn season.

Do: Regularly clear leaves from your decking!

Autumn inevitably brings falling leaves. Though the splashes of colour may be pretty to look at, there is a downside. Composite decking is durable and built to last, but under heaps of rotting leaves, there’s always a risk of staining. Regularly sweep your decking, piling leaves around your garden to provide much-needed shelter for hedgehogs!

Do: Replace wilted plants with vibrant new options

There’s nothing more disheartening than watching all the lovely flowers you planted in summer wither and die. But remember – you can add colour all year round! Go through your garden and get rid of any dead plants. You can then add autumn favourites like pansies or heathers. It’s an easy way to brighten up the space and keep your garden feeling fresh and lively as the season changes.

Do: Prepare your soil for the colder weather

Put those dead plants and leaves to good use! Composting is easier than you might think, and it makes a massive difference – so think again before you bin those potato peels. Whether you make it or buy it, compost is an essential addition to your garden in the autumn months. Apply a 2 – 3 inch layer to your garden beds. This will protect the soil from winter issues like frost and wind. It will also help in the long term, keeping weeds in check and ensuring healthy plants later in the year.

Do: Help out local wildlife

We may spend less time in our garden during autumn, but wildlife is busier than ever. Installing nesting boxes and providing food like suet blends or dried mealworms helps local birds thrive through winter. A birdbath offers a valuable water source and an eye-catching feature, attracting a flurry of curious birds even on gloomy days. With the right treats on offer, they won’t be your only visitors – you can also put out food for mice, squirrels and hedgehogs. Whatever animal visitors you get, keep them safe when starting autumn bonfires and check before you light!
