3 ways to make the most of your decking in autumn

autumn decking

Despite the shorter days and a hint of chill in the air, it doesn’t mean your outdoor enjoyment should end for the entire year—especially if you have some decking outside! Even as the seasons change, your deck remains an excellent spot to sit and embrace the beauty of the changing scenery, relishing in the unique charm that autumn brings. So here are a few of our top tips on how you can welcome the change of season while still getting the most out of your timber decking!

Make sure to get in some maintenance

First things first: maintenance. To ensure the longevity of your deck, you have to keep up with its yearly care to ensure that your outdoor space is ready for the colder and wetter months ahead. Start by clearing away leaves, twigs and other debris accumulated over the summer, then give your deck a thorough cleaning with some mild soap and a soft bristle brush. Whilst you’re tidying, check the structure for any damage. If you spot any slits, cracks or compromised boards, it’s best to make those repairs as needed, to prevent further issues later on.

If necessary, when you’re sure you’ve got a few dry and mild days. You can even apply a fresh coat of sealant or stain, which can help protect the wood from the autumn rains. Make sure to inspect the railings and support structures for stability and keep gutters and drainage systems clear to prevent water buildup. Keep on top of this by regularly clearing fallen leaves from the deck, preventing moisture buildup and potential damage or mould forming. Completing these maintenance tasks during autumn ensures your deck is in top condition when winter approaches!

Cosy up your seating areas

Now that your deck is spick and span and ready for the colder weather, you can start enjoying it without worrying. The first way we recommend is by cosying up your seating. That right, your summer seating doesn’t always have to be put away at the end of the season; instead, repurpose it with cosy cushions and throws and use it throughout autumn, too! If you have a roof or a veranda overlooking your timber decking, this works even better.

Warm up the nights with a fire pit

What goes better with cosy seating than a warm crackling fire? Nothing! That’s why our next tip is to invest in a fire pit or chiminea. Nothing makes sitting outside in chillier weather more comfortable than a cosy blanket and the warmth of a fire pit to light up the night. Whether sitting outside to enjoy the scenery or hosting friends or family, a fire pit will provide the perfect backdrop for a fun and chilled-out evening in the garden, enjoying a warm drink or even roasting marshmallows.

We have to say, though, make sure you’re taking the necessary steps to keep your decking safe from the heat; whether it’s timber decking or composite decking, you should never place a fire pit directly onto its surface. Always use a protective fire pad. It’s always good to also utilise a cage on the fire to catch any ashes or embers that could damage your decking.
