Yes we’re back again, with another seasonal post on how to make your decking feel festive! If you’re a returning visitor to our blog, you may remember our post on how to deck-orate your decking last year, and may have even used it as inspiration at the time. We thought it would be an excellent place to start building from in 2023, so in addition to those ideas, here are a couple more cool ways to bring that festive feeling to your timber or composite decking…
OK so we know we covered this to an extent last time, but one thing that we didn’t mention was colour, and how much of an impact it can have on the mood and atmosphere of your decking. If you’ve envisioned a serene calm kind of Christmas at home for example, blue or white fairy lights can really help give it that feeling of soft elegance that you can admire from the warmth of indoors.
Or, if you’re planning on spending time actually out on your decking at any stage, then you might want to go for warmer colours like red or orange or yellow. All of these can make a space feel more physically warm – handy for warming off the winter chills!
Speaking of warding off the winter chills, cushions and throws and other soft fabrics are perfect additions for your well-chosen decking furniture, especially if you’re planning on engaging in any of the winter activities we suggested in another recent post. The style is all up to you, but personally we’d say the thicker and fluffier the better. Drape them over chairs, get yourself snuggled, and a cup of hot cocoa. (Lovely.) You can even lay down an outdoor rug if you’d like, for that extra touch of warmth. Just make sure to bring it all in again if it looks like heavy rain!
A simple and cheap alternative to fairy lights, especially if you don’t have a mains cable readily available, or you can’t find any batteries – or if you plain just don’t fancy them for whatever reason. The good news is that garlands aren’t hard to find – you can buy them in plenty of places, or even make your own! There are plenty of options for where to use them, too; you can string them up across the fencing, you can put them across your shed, you can put them over furniture. And don’t forget – just as with the lights, the style and colour makes a big difference.
If you’re looking for a slightly more off-kilter way to light your decking, some candles and lanterns can be perfect seasonal options. Hurricane lamps are bursting with personality and a sure favourite for this kind of setting, given their very traditional flair. You can strategically position them around your decking at ground level, or on tables if you feel a bit more comfortable. Candles are another brilliant option, although you’ll need to follow all the normal safety rules – they should never be left unattended for example. Flameless candles are always a good alternative to consider if you’re a bit concerned, especially if you have wooden decking!
Those are just a couple of our ideas – you might well have plenty of your own!
